Music as therapy

I used to listen to music all the time. Now I could barely tell you whats in the charts. Gone are the days of the radio and MTV, and on goes Jake and The Neverland Pirates, of which I know all the words.

As an ex Occupational Therapist who worked in mental health I know how therapeutic music can people and in fact it is a therapy within its own right.

The fabulous Mammywoo has created a Music as therapy Meme, for people to link up three songs with lyrics that have significant meaning to them and can alter their mood in a second. Mammywoo has been blogging over the past year of her battle with post natal depression and the road to recovery in what can only be described an exceptionally honest, hilariously witty and profound account so go and read her blog! I was tagged into this meme by lovely The Boy and Me and just could not pass the chance by to join in remembering music!

So my first choice is Alanis Morrisette – Ironic

It’s like rain on your wedding day
It’s a free ride when you’ve already paid
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t take
Who would’ve thought… it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

This song, I just like singing from the top of my voice and when very drunk is my karaoke number! It actually is the song I listen to when I am feeling a little down about the world and it put things into perspective. Firstly it never rained on my wedding day, secondly I don’t like rides, so would never had paid anyway and thirdly I am so damn lucky with my family that my fear is things blowing up in my face! It actually makes me count my blessings. That and the fact that 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife is not really ironic but more unfortunate! But I do love the song.

Second choice is The Calling: Wherever you will go

This is the song that I want at my funeral. It makes my heart melt. My husband is the strongest, kindest most sensitive man you will ever have the privilege of meeting. I trust in his love for me and I am fully aware of his fear of death. Especially me. this song, makes me feel that I can talk to him (should that ever happen) that he could make it on his own, continue to be the fabulous Daddy he is, and should he find love again….well she just better not be prettier! he he.

So lately, I’ve been wonderin
Who will be there to take my place
When I’m gone, you’ll need love
To light the shadows on your face
If a great wave should fall
It would fall upon us all
And between the sand and stone
Could you make it on your own

[Chorus:]
If I could, then I would
I’ll go wherever you will go
Way up high or down low
I’ll go wherever you will go

Final choice: Katy Perry: Firework

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
‘Cause there’s a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

‘Cause baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ‘em what you’re worth
Make ‘em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ‘em go, oh
You’re gonna leave ‘em falling down

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

This song represents my lack of confidence in myself. I am a constant worrier and not someone who possesses any form of talent. This is not self pity, it is fact! This song however brings me hope that one day I will find it, and have the confidence to say ‘look at me, aren’t you proud I’m your friend’ rather than ‘please like me please like me!” Pathetic I know.

So there we have it three songs that mean something to me!

So I am going to tag
